The Ingress Protection (IP) Rating is a classification used to indicate the level of protection an electrical device provides against the ingress of solid objects, such as dust, and water. An IP rating consists of two digits. The first digit indicates the level of protection against solid particles and contact with internal components, while the second digit represents the level of protection against water ingress. The higher these values, the greater the luminaire's level of protection.
The appropriate IP rating depends on where the lighting fixture will be installed. In dry indoor environments, such as living rooms or offices, luminaires with a lower protection rating, such as IP20, are generally sufficient. In damp areas, bathrooms, or outdoor spaces, luminaires with a higher level of protection, such as IP44, IP65, or above, should be used, depending on their exposure to water and dirt.
In outdoor environments, the IP rating becomes even more important, as luminaires are exposed to rain, humidity, dust, and temperature changes. Choosing a luminaire with the appropriate level of protection helps prevent failures, extends the product's lifespan, and reduces maintenance costs.
For example, a luminaire rated IP65 is fully protected against dust and resistant to water jets, making it suitable for many outdoor applications. Products with higher IP ratings can provide additional protection for more demanding environments.
