3 Lighting Tips for Swimming Pools

With the arrival of warmer days, it's time to perform more thorough pool maintenance. It's important not to neglect the lighting in the surrounding area, as well as inside the pool itself. We've prepared this article with several tips to improve lighting, so you can enjoy this aquatic space in the late afternoons and evenings.

Outdoor pool area lighting

Projectors that can be placed in the corners of the pool can be used, providing uniform lighting. Projectors are available in rectangular, square, and stake shapes.

Stake projectors can be used if grass is available. They allow their location to be changed, offering the possibility of creating a dynamic space.

Projectors should ideally be installed with their backs to the house to avoid glare.

It is also possible to illuminate outer space in other ways, such as:

  • Floor lamps and transparent lanterns (where candles can be placed).
  • Neon LED strips. Neon LED strips are becoming increasingly popular and are typically installed around the perimeter of the pool.
  • Ground lights and markers.

Pool interior lighting

All pool lights are installed with an intermediate transformer that converts the voltage to 12V, so there is no risk related to electricity, making swimming completely safe.

Inside the pool, consideration should be given to the number of spotlights and their location.

To illuminate a small pool or jacuzzi, installing a spotlight is sufficient. For an original lighting effect, it could, for example, be placed at the bottom of the pool.

If the pool is up to 20m² , a 25W white projector is recommended, positioned 30cm to 40cm below the waterline. If the pool is more than 6 meters wide or more than 10 meters long, one projector will not be sufficient. In this case, it is recommended to place projectors across both widths of the pool, facing each other, thus eliminating shaded areas.

Projector installation methods

There are 3 methods for installing projectors in swimming pools:

  • With a niche: in this method, an ABS niche is embedded in the pool wall and serves as a support for the lamp. A PAR56 lamp is usually installed.
  • On a support: the support is fixed to the pool wall and the LED projector is installed on top of this support. These projectors are called flat or extra-flat spotlights because they don't extend very far from the pool wall.
  • In bushings or nozzles: in this method, bushings or the suction nozzles themselves are used to screw the projectors into the pool.

Floating lighting

There are also floating lighting elements. These innovative elements can be placed in the water without needing to be connected to a power source; they only require a simple charge to function for 6 to 8 hours, and they also allow for color changes.

We emphasize that all pool lighting will come into contact with water to a greater or lesser extent; therefore, we recommend that all items have an IP67 rating or higher.
